half-hitch

Basic sailor's knot

A half-hitch is a simple knot made by passing a rope around an object and then through the loop formed, creating a single turn that tightens under tension.

It's rarely used alone since it can slip; two half-hitches in succession make a more secure fastening: He tied the boat to the dock with two half-hitches.
