gunflint

Musket ignition chip

A gunflint is a small piece of flint shaped to fit in the hammer of a flintlock firearm.

When the trigger is pulled, the hammer strikes the gunflint against steel, creating sparks that ignite the powder charge.

Gunflints were essential military and hunting supplies from the 17th through early 19th centuries, before percussion caps replaced flintlock mechanisms.
