guinea-worm

Water flea parasite

A guinea-worm is a parasitic roundworm that infests humans through contaminated drinking water.

The larvae mature inside the body, and adult females—which can grow to a meter long—emerge slowly through painful blisters in the skin, traditionally extracted by winding the worm around a stick over days or weeks.

Guinea-worm disease has been nearly eradicated through clean water initiatives.
