gourd resonator
Dried squash amplifier
A gourd resonator is the dried, hollowed shell of a gourd attached to a musical instrument to amplify and enrich its sound.
Common on African instruments like the balafon and kora, and on instruments derived from them, the gourd vibrates sympathetically with the strings or bars above it: The marimba's gourd resonators give it that distinctive warm tone.
