goosefish

Bottom-dwelling ambush predator

A goosefish is a large, flat-bodied fish with an enormous head and gaping mouth, found along Atlantic coastlines.

It lies camouflaged on the seafloor, using a fleshy lure to attract prey.

Also called monkfish or anglerfish, it's commercially harvested for its firm, lobster-like tail meat: The restaurant's monkfish was probably goosefish from the Atlantic.
