esca
Grapevine fungal affliction
Esca is a destructive fungal disease of grapevines, causing leaf discoloration, wood decay, and sometimes sudden vine death.
The disease has plagued vineyards since ancient times and remains a significant problem for wine producers: Several vines in the old block showed classic esca symptoms.
Also called black measles for the dark spotting it produces on grape berries.
