manner of articulation
How sounds form
Manner of articulation describes how airflow is modified when producing a speech sound.
A consonant might completely stop the air (as with p or t), let it flow through the nose (m or n), or force it through a narrow gap to create friction (f or s).
The term belongs to phonetics, where it combines with place of articulation to classify consonants: The manner of articulation for "sh" is fricative.
