catastrophizing
Expecting the worst
Catastrophizing is imagining the worst possible outcome of a situation, often spiraling from minor concerns to disaster scenarios: I have a headache—what if it's a brain tumor?
The term comes from psychology, where it describes a cognitive distortion that amplifies anxiety.
Someone who catastrophizes treats unlikely worst cases as inevitable.
