Roman forts
Ancient military encampments
Roman forts were military installations built throughout the Roman Empire to house troops, secure conquered territories, and defend borders.
They followed standardized layouts with walls, gates, barracks, headquarters, and granaries.
Many European towns grew from Roman fort sites, their names preserving the Latin *castra* (camp): Lancaster, Chester, Worcester.
Hadrian's Wall was studded with Roman forts.
