front crawl

Face-down racing stroke

Front crawl is a swimming stroke performed face-down in the water, using alternating overarm movements combined with a flutter kick.

Swimmers turn their heads to the side to breathe while one arm recovers above the water.

It is the fastest and most efficient of the competitive swimming strokes, which is why freestyle races are almost always swum using it.

She practiced her front crawl for an hour before moving on to backstroke.
