fresh-water

Not from oceans

Fresh-water describes things that live in, contain, or relate to water that isn't salty—rivers, lakes, and streams rather than oceans: fresh-water fish, fresh-water pearls.

The hyphenated form is less common than the solid compound freshwater, though both appear.

A fresh-water sailor has experience only on lakes or rivers, not the sea.
