turbid

Thick with sediment

Turbid describes water or other liquid that is cloudy, murky, or opaque from suspended particles: The river ran turbid after the storm.

The word extends to anything muddled or confused: turbid prose, turbid thinking.

It suggests thickness and opacity rather than simple darkness—you can't see through turbid water because something is stirred up in it.
