foolscap

Large writing sheets

Foolscap is a size of paper, traditionally about 13 by 16 inches, once standard for legal and official documents in Britain.

The name comes from the watermark of a jester's cap that once identified paper of this grade.

Now the term mostly appears in British English for legal-size paper or writing pads: a pad of foolscap, sheets of foolscap covered in handwriting.
