Highest possible grade
A1 designates the highest quality or first rank, originally from Lloyd's Register of Shipping, where it classified vessels in prime condition.
The letter indicated the hull's state, the number the equipment's: an A1 steak, A1 condition.
A1 is also the name of a popular steak sauce brand in the United States. (Lowercase a1 is informal.)
