floppy diskette

Eighties data square

A floppy diskette is a portable data storage medium used with personal computers from the 1970s through the 1990s.

The thin magnetic disk inside a flexible plastic sleeve gave it the name—early versions bent easily.

Floppies held modest amounts of data by modern standards and were gradually replaced by CDs, USB drives, and cloud storage.

The floppy disk icon persists as the universal "save" symbol in software.
