data encoding

Structuring raw information

Data encoding is the process of converting information from one format to another for storage, transmission, or processing.

Text might be encoded as ASCII or UTF-8, audio as MP3, video as H.264.

Encoding differs from encryption: encoding transforms data for compatibility or efficiency, while encryption transforms it for secrecy.

The file wouldn't display because of a data encoding mismatch.
