fava bean

Falafel ingredient sometimes

Fava bean is a large, flat legume with a thick skin, eaten fresh or dried.

Also called broad bean, especially in British English.

The beans grow in thick pods and have an earthy, slightly bitter flavor.

They're common in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines: fava bean dip, pasta with fava beans and pecorino.

Some people of Mediterranean descent have a genetic condition causing severe reactions to favas.
