staple crop

Agricultural food base

A staple crop is a food plant that forms the foundation of a population's diet—rice in much of Asia, wheat in Europe and North America, maize in Central America, cassava in parts of Africa.

These crops provide the bulk of calories and are grown or consumed in large quantities year-round: Potatoes became Ireland's staple crop by the 18th century.
