factoid

Dubious little datum

A factoid is a piece of information that sounds like a fact but may be false or unverified—something repeated so often it gets accepted as true.

The word has shifted to also mean a brief, trivial fact: The magazine sidebar was full of factoids about celebrity pets.

This newer sense now dominates, though purists object that it contradicts the original meaning.
