factorize

Break into primes

To factorize is to break a number or expression into its factors—the components that multiply together to produce it.

In arithmetic, factorizing 12 yields 2 × 2 × 3.

In algebra, factorizing x² − 4 produces (x + 2)(x − 2).

The term is more common in British English; Americans often say factor instead: Can you factor this polynomial?
