f-hole

Cello's curved cutout

An f-hole is one of a pair of sound holes cut into the body of a violin, viola, cello, or similar stringed instrument, shaped like a cursive lowercase f.

These openings allow the instrument's body to resonate and project sound.

The term extends to f-hole guitars—acoustic or semi-acoustic guitars with the same shaped openings: The jazz guitarist preferred the warm tone of his f-hole archtop.
