chinrest

Fiddler's face perch

A chinrest is a shaped piece of wood or plastic attached to the lower bout of a violin or viola, positioned to the left of the tailpiece, where the player rests their chin while holding the instrument.

It allows the player to secure the instrument between chin and shoulder without gripping it with the left hand, freeing the hand for fingering.

She adjusted the chinrest to a more comfortable angle before the recital.
