life net
Firefighter's catching device
A life net is a strong net held taut by firefighters or rescue workers to catch people jumping from burning buildings.
The device saw wide use before modern aerial ladders and is now largely historical, though it persists in circus acts and as a metaphor for any safety backup: The emergency fund served as a life net for the struggling family.
