encrust

Form hard layer

To encrust is to cover with a hard coating or layer, especially one that builds up gradually: Barnacles encrusted the hull, a crown encrusted with jewels.

The coating itself can be decorative or unwanted—gemstones set into metal, or mineral deposits on pipes.

Something encrusted has acquired such a covering: encrusted with dirt and grime.
