jeweling

Embedding precious stones

Jeweling is the practice of setting small jewels—typically synthetic rubies or sapphires—into mechanical watch movements.

The jewels serve as bearings at friction points, reducing wear on metal parts: a seventeen-jewel movement.

The term also covers decorative work with gems more broadly, or the act of adorning something as if with jewels.

Also spelled jewelling.
