emigres

Those who left

Emigres are people who have left their home country, typically for political reasons.

The term carries connotations of exile or flight rather than voluntary relocation—emigres often cannot safely return.

Originally applied to French aristocrats fleeing the Revolution, it now describes any politically displaced group: Cuban emigres in Miami, Russian emigres in Paris.

Also spelled émigrés.
