current account

Everyday banking account

A current account is a bank account for everyday transactions—deposits, withdrawals, and payments—as opposed to savings accounts designed for accumulating money.

In economics, the current account is a component of a country's balance of payments, tracking trade in goods and services plus income flows: The country's current account deficit widened.

Called a checking account in American English.
