droving

Moving cattle overland

Droving is the practice of moving livestock over long distances on foot, especially driving cattle or sheep across country to market or new pastures.

The term evokes a traditional agricultural practice largely replaced by motorized transport: In the old days, droving could take weeks across open range.

A person who does this work is a drover.
