double reeds

Oboes and bassoons

Double reeds are a class of woodwind instruments whose sound is produced by two thin pieces of cane bound together and vibrating against each other when the player blows air between them.

The oboe, English horn, and bassoon are the principal double reeds in Western orchestras.

The term also refers to the reed assemblies themselves, which players often make or adjust by hand.

The double reeds section sat behind the flutes.
