double quotes
Enclose direct speech
Double quotes are the quotation marks that look like pairs of apostrophes (" "), as opposed to single quotes (' ').
American English uses double quotes for direct speech and quoted material: "She said, 'I'll be there.'".
In programming, double quotes often denote string literals.
The term distinguishes them from single quotes, which serve different purposes depending on context.
