hyphenation
Compound word linking
Hyphenation is the use of hyphens to join words or word parts.
Style guides differ on when compound modifiers need hyphenation: a well-known author versus an author who is well known.
Hyphenation also refers to breaking words across lines at syllable boundaries, once common in typesetting but now often handled automatically by software.
