smart quotes
Typographically correct quotations
Smart quotes are the curly quotation marks (" " ' ') that word processors automatically substitute for straight quotes (" ').
They curve toward the text they enclose, distinguishing opening from closing marks.
The "smart" refers to software detecting which direction the curve should face based on context.
Typographers prefer them, but they can cause problems in code or plain-text environments where straight quotes are expected.
