buzz bomb

Droning aerial weapon

A buzz bomb was a German self-propelled flying bomb used in World War II, officially the V-1.

The name comes from the distinctive buzzing sound of its pulse-jet engine—when the buzzing stopped, the bomb was about to fall.

Londoners learned to dread the silence after a buzz bomb's engine cut out.

Also called a doodlebug.
