donburi

Japanese topped rice

Donburi is a Japanese dish of rice topped with meat, fish, vegetables, or eggs served in a bowl—the bowl itself is also called a donburi.

The word often appears shortened to don in compound names: gyudon (beef bowl), katsudon (breaded pork cutlet bowl), oyakodon (chicken and egg bowl).

It's comfort food, hearty and unpretentious.
