A dogtag is a metal identification tag worn by military personnel, typically on a chain around the neck.
The tags bear essential information—name, service number, blood type—for identifying casualties.
The name comes from their resemblance to pet identification tags.
In extended use, dogtag applies to any similar identification tag: The gym requires members to scan their dogtags at entry.
