audio distortion
Garbled signal output
Audio distortion is any unwanted alteration to a sound signal that changes its original character.
In recording and playback, distortion typically degrades quality—clipping, buzzing, or muddiness from overdriven speakers or poor equipment.
But distortion is also deliberately applied as an effect, especially in electric guitar: That amp has great distortion.
Fuzz, overdrive, and crunch are varieties of intentional distortion.
