syllable stress
Emphasized spoken unit
Syllable stress is the emphasis placed on one syllable over others in a word.
English words of more than one syllable have at least one stressed syllable, pronounced with greater force or higher pitch: The stress falls on the first syllable in "camera" but the second in "banana".
Stress patterns distinguish some word pairs: CONduct (noun) versus conDUCT (verb).
