diastasis recti

Split stomach muscles

Diastasis recti is a separation of the abdominal muscles along the midline, where the connective tissue stretching between the left and right sides of the rectus abdominis thins and widens.

It commonly occurs during pregnancy as the abdomen expands, but can also result from rapid weight gain or improper exercise technique.

The gap may cause a visible bulge or ridge down the center of the belly, especially when straining: She was doing exercises to close her diastasis recti after giving birth.
