buprenorphine
Partial opioid agonist
Buprenorphine is a synthetic opioid used to treat opioid addiction and chronic pain.
It binds to the same brain receptors as heroin or oxycodone but produces weaker effects, reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms without the intense high.
Sold under brand names like Suboxone and Subutex, it's a cornerstone of medication-assisted treatment: The clinic prescribes buprenorphine to help patients taper off heroin.
