overstimulation

Too much input

Overstimulation is the state of having too much sensory input, mental activity, or external stimulation to process comfortably.

It commonly describes what happens to infants and young children when bombarded with noise, light, or activity, leading to fussiness or meltdowns.

Adults use it too, especially in discussions of sensory processing: The crowded mall left me in a state of overstimulation.

The term also applies to excessive nerve or muscle activation in medical contexts.
