Roman numerals

Clock face symbols

Roman numerals are the system of notation used in ancient Rome, employing letters to represent values: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), M (1000).

Numbers are formed by combination: VI is 6, IV is 4.

The system persists in formal contexts—clock faces, chapter headings, Super Bowl numbers, monarchs' names: Queen Elizabeth II, Super Bowl LVIII.
