color bars

Broadcast calibration stripes

Color bars are a standardized pattern of vertical colored stripes used to calibrate television monitors and video equipment.

The classic pattern shows specific colors in sequence—white, yellow, cyan, green, magenta, red, blue, black—each representing precise signal levels.

Broadcasters display color bars during technical tests or when programming isn't airing: We're experiencing difficulties; please stand by over color bars.

Also called SMPTE bars after the standards organization.
