death zones
Where climbers perish
Death zones are areas where conditions make survival extremely difficult or impossible.
The term most commonly refers to altitudes above about 8,000 meters on mountains like Everest, where oxygen levels are too low to sustain human life for extended periods: Climbers can only spend limited time in the death zone.
The phrase extends to any region where environmental hazards—extreme cold, radiation, lack of oxygen—create lethal conditions: The reactor core became a death zone after the meltdown.
