balaclava

Knitted face covering

A balaclava is a close-fitting knit cap that covers the head and neck, leaving only the face (or eyes and mouth) exposed.

Originally worn for warmth in extreme cold, it's now associated with skiing, motorcycling, and—because it conceals identity—bank robberies and military operations: The masked men wore balaclavas.
