counterstamp

Mark over mark

A counterstamp is a secondary mark or impression stamped onto something already marked—typically a coin, medal, or official document.

Governments counterstamped foreign coins to authorize them for local circulation, or added marks to extend validity: The Spanish dollars were counterstamped for use in the colonies.

The verb means to apply such a mark.
