fianchetto

Flank bishop development

Fianchetto is a chess opening strategy where a bishop is developed to the second square of the adjacent knight's file, typically after moving the pawn one square forward.

The bishop sits on the long diagonal, controlling the center from a distance: He fianchettoed his king's bishop on g2.

The term comes from Italian, meaning "little flank." Plural: fianchetti or fianchettos.
