cotter
Hole-passing fastener
A cotter is a pin or wedge passed through a hole to hold parts together.
A cotter pin is a split metal pin whose ends are bent back after insertion to prevent loosening—used to secure nuts, bolts, or axle ends: The wheel came off because the cotter pin had sheared.
A cotter key serves the same function.
