cotters
Wedges securing machinery
Cotters are wedge-shaped pins or tapered pieces inserted through holes to fasten parts together, especially in machinery.
A cotter pin passes through a bolt or shaft and is bent to prevent slipping.
In a different sense, cotters were peasant farmers in Scotland and Ireland who occupied small holdings in exchange for labor—a usage now mainly historical.
