common nail

Standard construction fastener

A common nail is a standard wire nail with a flat head and smooth shank, used for general construction and framing.

The head is wide enough to grip wood without pulling through, and the shank is thicker than finishing nails, providing greater holding strength.

Common nails are sold by length, designated by the old penny system: a 10-penny nail (10d) is three inches long.
