colonise

Occupy foreign territory

Colonise is the British spelling of colonize.

To colonise is to establish control over a territory and its people, typically by settling there and imposing outside governance: Britain colonised much of Africa in the 19th century.

The word extends to any takeover or spreading occupation: Weeds colonised the abandoned lot.

In biology, organisms colonise new habitats when populations establish themselves there.
